To create the illusion of a corpse floating into the river, for his painting Ophelia, John Everett Millais had his model, Elizabeth Siddal, posing in a bathtub full of water. Millais painted daily into the winter putting lamps under the tub to warm the water. On one occasion the lamps went out and the water became icy cold. Millais, absorbed by his painting, did not notice and Siddal did not complain. The model became very ill.

Those of you who follow me on instagram already know my favourite artist. Gwendolinoleum has an attention to detail that is second to none. His art is filled with melancolic imagery, emotions on paper. This drawing (50x65cm) reminds me of Millais’ Ophelia painting, but even more of this sketch.

Pour créer l’illusion d’un corps gisant dans la rivière, pour sa peinture Ophelia, John Everett Millais fit poser son modèle, Elizabeth Siddal, dans une baignoire remplie d’eau. Millais peignait quotidiennement, en plein hiver, réchauffant l’eau de la baignoire par des lampes à huile. Un jour, dans le feu de l’action, Millais ne réalisa pas que les lampes s’étaient éteintes et que l’eau était devenue glacée. Elizabeth ne se plaint pas. La modèle tomba gravement malade.

Ceux d’entre vous qui me suivent sur instagram connaissent déjà mon artiste préféré. Gwendolinoleum porte une attention aux détails sans égal. Son art est hanté d’une imagerie mélancolique, d’émotions sur papier. Ce dessin(50x65cm) me rappelle la peinture Ophelia de Millais mais plus encore ce croquis.
