Coatlicue was the goddess of the earth and was also thought to have given birth to Centzonhuitznahuac -the stars- and Coyolxauhqui -the moon-.
The moon and the stars were jealous of Huitzilopochtli -the sun-. Therefore Huitzilopochtli used the “serpent of fire” during his birth to defeat them. From that point forward, the stars and the moon continued to battle the sun.
Therefore, the Aztecs considered each sunrise to be a celebration of the victory of the sun over the moon and the stars.

La lune et les étoiles étaient jalouses d’Huitzilopochtli -le soleil-. C’est ainsi qu’afin de les défier, Huitzilopochtli utilisa le “serpent de feu” lors de sa naissance. A partir de ce moment là, les étoiles et la lune continuèrent à lutter contre le soleil.
C’est pourquoi les Aztèques considèrent chaque lever de soleil comme une victoire du soleil contre la lune et les étoiles.
